Due to popular demand (and personal enjoyment!) Deborah Kayser, Andrea Keeble, Nils Hobiger and Anthony Schulz come together to share the music that has inspired them through the past 2 years of lockdowns and continue to influence their creative expression. Performing duets, trios and quartets of arrangements by classical composers Ravel, Britten, Gliere, and Achron as well as Irish folk songs and original music, the concert is truly a celebration of live music in all its diversity.

Soprano Deborah Kayser performs in areas as diverse as ancient Byzantine chant, French and German Baroque song and classical contemporary music working with Chamber Made, Elision Ensemble and Liza Lim. She was recently granted a luminary award in the Art Music Awards 2021 for her 30 years contribution to Australian new music.

Andrea Keeble is known for her diversity of work as violinist, composer, educator and director of Ad Hoc Collective that includes The David Chesworth Ensemble, The Black Arm Band, My Friend the Chocolate Cake, contemporary classical Silo String Quartet, Aria Award nominated contemporary folk Cosmo Cosmolino and regular guest violinist with MSO.

Queensland cellist Nils Hobiger is a recent Honours graduate on scholarship and has completed the Professional Performance Program at the Australian National Academy of Music. Now based in Melbourne, Nils currently enjoys being a freelance cellist, appearing as a regular guest with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria.

Anthony Schulz, is an ARIA award winning accordionist. He has performed with ECM Records icon Barre Phillips; the noted jazz vibraphonist Dave Samuels, renowned guitarist Doug DeVries and the MSO. He is currently with Zulya and the Children of the Underground, and a trio with Eugene Ball and Ben Hanlon.

Andrea Keeble, violin, and Anthony Schulz, piano accordion, present a unique opportunity for students and music lovers to observe the intricate and intimate workings behind their new collaboration “Sun Most South”.  Andrea and Anthony will perform and discuss their process of adaptation, arrangement and composition for violin and piano accordion armed with their respective wealth of experience that includes Cosmo Cosmolino and Zulya and the Children of the Underground as well as their backgrounds in Classical and Jazz music.  The workshop will explore their process that led to the reconceptualisation of Manuel DeFalla’s El Amor Brujo’; Love the Magician, a passionate expose’ of love conquering evil and Prokofiev’s Violin Sonata alongside Stravinsky, Dilermando Ries and their own original works.

“Sun Most South” is born of the fertile creativity of Andrea Keeble (violin) and Anthony Schulz (piano accordion). Reimagining classical repertoire by De Falla, Prokofiev and Stravinsky, they weave improvisations and original compositions into an intimate duet collaboration.

In an artistic vein so often traversed, through which opposites attract, “Sun Most South” explore the exquisite tension that exists in-between; where musical worlds collide and ignite. What Andrea Keeble (violin) and Anthony Schulz (piano accordion) bring to Manuel DeFalla’s El Amor Brujo’; Love the Magician, a passionate expose’ of love conquering evil, and Prokofiev’s Violin Sonata, to Stravinsky, Dilermando Ries and their own works is the nexus between the ancient and new. “Sun Most South” is born of the fertile creative entities Cosmo Cosmolino, Zulya and the Children of the Underground and much more.

The second set of the evening will be featuring a series of new arrangements and compositions of duets, a trio and an improvised quartet by all performers.

Including ..
As a new collaboration, Andrea Keeble (violin) and Anthony Schulz (piano accordion) will be performing their arrangements of works by Prokofiev and Stravinsky plus their own original duets;

Adrian Sherriff will perform a new duet by Andrea for Violin + Shakuhachi, and in term, perform a new duet by Adrian for Violin + Shakuhachi;
Kylie Morrigan will join Andrea to improvise as violin dualists, and then include a new work by Kylie for 2 Violins + Trombone;

And to conclude, we will all improvise together, Violin (prepared), Violin (5 string), Shakuhachi (and Trombone?!) and Piano Accordion.

I’d like to thank MUSICA (Adrian Sherriff and Annabel Warmington) for their  wholehearted support of new and improvised music over the past 18 years and am privileged to be included in their final concert series (concluding in June).

Ad Hoc Collective performs GOTHIC by Andrée Greenwell

This acclaimed journey of musical gothicism will be presented at Riverside Parramatta Friday Nov 9 and at the Melbourne Arts Centre, Sunday Nov 25.

Gothic is a concert of European, Australian and American gothic song, from medieval to contemporary times. Blending contemporary classical, folk and post-punk music styles, inventive covers of The Cure’s ‘A Forest’, Schubert’s ‘Erlkonig’, Kate Bush’s ‘Wuthering Heights’, Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ list alongside new songs composed by Andrée to lyrics by Hilary Bell, Alison Croggon, Maryanne Lynch, Hugo Race and Felicity Plunkett.

Performed by singer Jessica O’Donohue (Rape of Lucretia, Dark MOFO), David Trumpmanis on guitar, and Melbourne-based string quartet Ad Hoc Collective (Andrea Keeble, Kylie Morrigan, Josh Stilwell and Noella Yan).
