Reggie’s Quartet – Score and parts

Reggie’s Quartet was initially composed as a technical exercise for violin, based on chromaticism and string crossings. It developed into a somewhat rambling, minimalistic journey into darker harmonies with gypsy-inspired themes, through a surging emotional climax, and concluding in a defiant positive light.

‘Reggie’ was one of the nicknames my sisters gave me when I was very young (after Reggie in the TV show ‘Bad News Bears’). In a way this quartet is a dedication to Marcia and Carol, and our childhood together; of the innocence in playful teasing with a foreboding apprehension of growing up.

This quartet should be played with a sense of freedom and expression. Expressive subtle slides would not be out of place in the Meno mosso.
